Suckling Bottle Set for puppies and kittens of small, medium-sized and large breeds, 3 soft silicone teats in different sizes (sterilisable), with lid and measuring spoon, 10 ml, rearing bottle, 120 ml. It is always the preferable choice for a mother to rear her young, but in many circumstances this may not be possible. Loss of the mothers life, illness, injury are just some of the reasons a mother may not be able to nurse. In some circumstances a mother may reject a young pup or simply not have enough milk supply to support a large litter. Whatever the reason you may find yourself in a situation where you have to feed a dog or cats young yourself. Without the right tools this can be really tricky. But a simple bottle and teat set can make this job all the more manageable.
Orphaned baby animals need a quick supply of liquid/food to survive. Therefore a bottle with milk substitute should be offered as soon as possible. The milk substitute has to match the type of animal.
Optimal care of orphaned animals is only possible with a surrogate mother. Therefore it is recommended to start bottle-feeding and look for a foster mother at the same time. If no foster mother can be found, a grown animal experienced in dealing with young ones should support the bottle-feeding and provide the necessary social behaviour
What is it for?
to support new-born animals and provide orphaned animals with liquid and food
Measurements: 120 ml
Please note: Bottle-feeding often seems to be the best way to make sure the puppies or kittens survive. In order to live in a world with other grown-up animals later, however, dogs and cats should have contact to other animals of their species from birth onward and ideally grow up in a whole family unit.
The feeding bottle should be cleaned before and after each use. Wash in hot water and a bit of washing-up liquid and rinse in clear water to remove possible residue of washing up liquid. Sterilize bottle and accessories regularly in boiling water.
2. Preparing the milk
The milk should be mixed freshly before each feeding. Give boiled water and milk powder into the bottle according to the producer’s specifications. Close the bottle with the lid before shaking it. Then exchange the lid for the teat. For a temperature check, hold the bottle against your cheek or check the temperature on your wrist (temperature not over 36 °C).
3. How to feed
The position for drinking should follow the natural position when drinking from the mother's teats, that means the baby animal should sit or lie on its stomach. Its head should be upright. Always press out a drop before placing the teat into the puppy's mouth. That way, you check that the teat is not blocked and awaken the puppy's interest. Once the teat is in its mouth, there should be no more pressure on the bottle, otherwise this can lead to choking. By slightly moving the teat forward and backward, you can encourage the puppy to suck.
4. After feeding
After each meal, the digestion must be stimulated with a light belly massage or soft stroking of the anal region. The stroking replaces the mother's licking. The belly massage should not be more intensive than that. A soft flannel or paper tissue is best for the massage, as they simultaneously catch any urine or faeces.
5. Frequency of feeding
In the first two weeks, newborn animals should be fed every 2–4 hours. After the second week, the frequency can in most cases be reduced to every 4–6 hours. Please note: The frequency of feeding depends on the daily weight gain, the general condition of the animal as well as the type of milk used. Once the baby animal can sit on its own (after about 2–3 weeks) the milk can be offered in a bowl (for example TRIXIE puppy bowl item 25281/25282). Wean and start feeding mash or puppy feed only from the age of 3 weeks at the earliest. Again, it is recommended to feed the baby animals together from one puppy bowl.
A young animal should invest some effort in feeding and drinking. That aids a healthy mental development as far as stress and frustration tolerance are concerned
